A family planning centre at the Rabia Balkhi hospital, Kabul.
Although Afghanistan has made remarkable progress in the health sector in the last few years, the country’s child mortality rate remains the highest in Asia.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in partnership with the Ministry of Public Health, has helped establish family planning training centres in Mazar and Kabul with a third planned for Jalalabad, aimed at reducing the child mortality rate.
Worldwide researchers estimate that universal access to family planning could save the lives of about 175,000 women each year.
