Every year on 7 April, World Health Day is marked with thousands of global events highlighting the importance of health.
This year the focus is on the resilience and safety of health facilities and the health workers who treat those affected by emergencies.
In Afghanistan this week the United Nations is highlighting the achievements and challenges facing the health sector in the country.
The percentage of primary healthcare facilities in Afghanistan with at least one female doctor, nurse or midwife increased from 38 per cent in 2003 to 76 per cent in 2008.
